The Sin of Worry (July)

Trusting God Like the Birds Do
by Sarah L. Bryant

“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life,
what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body,
what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap,
nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them.
Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought
can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment?
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed
like one of these…But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Take therefore no thought for the morrow:
for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.”

-From Matthew Chapter Six

My Dear Sisters,

Do you worry? What do you worry about? Why do you worry? Have you ever thought of worry as a sin against the Lord, your Maker?

Let’s consider this passage, where Jesus speaks of His Father’s care and provision for every bird of the air. This is amazing to ponder, for there are about 100 billion birds alive in the world today. God gives them life and also provides for their every meal. And have you ever noticed how often a bird eats? They eat constantly—probably one hundred meals a day. They do not plan where they will harvest their next meal, nor do they store food for the next day. Have you ever spotted a refrigerator in a bird’s nest?! Birds simply do not worry about their next meal; they know that their Creator can provide for them. If you do the math, you will discover that our magnificent God serves about ten trillion bird meals on a daily basis. That is a lot of meals over the course of a year to plan out!

Matthew 10:29-30 comments, “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Our Savior and Lord continually amazes and humbles me! Not only does He care about feeding every bird in the air—but He also cares about the very minutest things about me and my life. He cares about me—just one human living in one of the galaxies He created! My God never misses anything that is going on in my heart or life. He knows every last corner of my thoughts and has a plan for my future. “Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me” (Psalm 139:5). My God is not an absent-minded Father. For example, do you know those times when you are concentrating really hard on something, and then you look up to realize that the phone was ringing, a sibling was talking to you, and you let dinner burn all at the same time?! I know I do this often. However, our God never lets anything get out of control for one millisecond. If He did, this world would vanish, for He is its only sustaining hand (Colossians 1:16). The Lord is more aware of what is going on in our lives than we even are ourselves. That is pretty amazing (and comforting!) to think about. “Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off” (Psalm 139:2).

This brings us to the question—why do we ever worry? Why are we ever anxious? Jesus has told us, “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?” (Matthew 6:27) We have a tendency to worry about the thousands of things that could happen to us tomorrow. We worry about the troubles that could befall us or the things we “need,” but does one minute of worry ever change or help anything? Do we ever wake up one morning and think, “I’m so glad I worried all day yesterday about today’s problems! That will help me so much today!”

Someone once told me to imagine this scenario—a little girl worrying constantly about whether her dad will provide breakfast the next morning. Her loving and faithful dad has always provided every meal for her, yet she sits on the couch and frets. She doesn’t get up to wash the dishes, wash the laundry, or her schoolwork—she just worries about tomorrow! This sounds funny, because of course we know this girl has no reason to be worrying—yet in a much similar way, don’t we find ourselves worrying unnecessarily about tomorrow, while neglecting our duties today? I was humbled as I realized my own sin in often doing this very thing.

Our Lord and Master has promised us, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). God’s promises stand true throughout eternity. There is never any reason for us as believers to ever worry or wonder if God can/will provide for us. How old are you? Has God ever neglected to provide a meal or true need in the past years of your life? I can say that my God has provided for the past twenty-one years of my life perfectly. Never has He forgotten anything that I truly needed! Why do I ever worry then about whether He will provide in the future? And if He does withhold something from me, isn’t it because He truly loves me and has something better in store? Because He wants to sanctify me and work all things together for good? I am so grateful for my heavenly Father that cares for the very numbers of hair on our heads, and cares about working through us His perfect will. Dear sister, isn’t it incredible to think about how the God of the universe provides for us—His wee little daughters?!

To doubt and worry is essentially to tell the Lord that we do not believe He is able to do us good. After all He has done on our behalf—we still doubt Him?! What sin! Our God has not only provided us with life and breath, but He has also covered us in the blood of His own Son. If our God chose to give us the most costly clothing ever imagined—His own Son’s blood of righteousness! (Isaiah 61:10)—can’t He provide for our earthly needs? Doesn’t He have the funds and all the world besides (Psalm 50:10)? It is sin for us to doubt the Lord when He has given us so many eternal blessings (Psalm 103).

Let us be obedient to God’s Word, which commands us to “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” For, “His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him” (2 Samuel 22:31). May we be obedient, faithful stewards of the gifts God has given us today, while trusting Him to provide for tomorrow’s needs far above what we ever asked or thought. Let us seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness—today.

“I will greatly rejoice in the LORD,
my soul shall be joyful in my God;
for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation,
he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments,
and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.”

(Isaiah 61:10)

A Letter for Daughters-In-“Waiting” (June)

by a Sister in Christ

“O LORD of hosts,
blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.”
{Psalm 84:12}

The morning rays illumine the pages of the letter a young lady is writing to her dear friend…

Dearest friend,

Good morning! It was such a delight to visit with you last week and hear how the Lord is teaching you. I am always encouraged by our visits and just wanted to let you know that you are in my prayers as you walk in faithfulness during this season as a daughter. The Lord has you right where you are today for a reason and has a purpose for each day ahead. May He teach you to daily serve Him joyfully and contentedly, for there is never reason to allow doubts to creep in and wonder if He has made a mistake in not bringing a godly husband into your life yet. I am so thankful that our God makes no mistakes and He is sovereign! Although I know this truth in my mind, I still lack faith at times. Why do I ever doubt if this is reallywhere God wants me today? Why do I ever wonder if God can bring a godly man along? God can do all things and sovereignly knows right now the very date of my marriage, death, and everything that will occur in between! “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!” (Psalm 139:17) I pray that I will learn to immediately conquer my doubts and bring to mind God’s many promises to those who trust Him…

“They that know thy name will put their trust in thee:
for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.”
{Psalm 9:10}

“Oh how great is thy goodness,
which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee;
which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee
before the sons of men!”
{Psalm 31:19}

He shall cover thee with his feathers,
and under his wings shalt thou trust:
his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

{Psalm 91:4}

The Lord has been convicting my heart lately, about not “waiting” on Him in the sense that I am living in constant expectation for Him to “rescue” me out of my singleness – but rather serving joyfully in this “PLAN A” place that God has me in today. This season of singleness is not “Plan B.” This is the perfect will of God and He has a mission for me to accomplish today as I walk in obedience and joyfully serve my family. To find my all in all in Christ alone. It is so much more joy-filled and fulfilling to be perfectly content in Christ and all He is to me, rather than wishing some thing or some event or some one will fill my desires. That can never happen. Christ must be my all and my full satisfaction. “For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness” (Psalm 107:9). Jesus is the only One Who will never fail or forsake me. Isn’t this just an incredible promise to meditate on?!

“He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper,
and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”
{Hebrews 13:5-6}

I believe that every child of God is tested and tried at some point in life, and He uses these times to point their eyes to Him and teach them to trust Him. John Newton once said, “God chooses for His people better than they could choose for themselves. If they are in heaviness, there is a need-be for it, and He withholds nothing from them but what, upon the whole, it is better they should be without.” God is currently teaching you and I, as unmarried women, to trust Him through our fears, doubts, and emotions in our desire for marriage. What a merciful God we have Who desires to teach us such priceless lessons. He is using these tests to refine us, purify our hearts and our devotion to Him, and teach us to cling to Him. I think of how my struggles and weaknesses have forced me to go directly to the Lord and cast my burden upon Him alone. Ultimately, no one else can help or solve my struggles nor forgive my sinful doubts. “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22). This is such an important time to seek a deeper relationship with our Lord and Savior, isn’t it?! It is not a time of “waiting.” It is a season of growing and seeking, one full of purpose and growth!

Thank you for sharing your thought-provoking question with me, “What if this is the last family we ever have to serve and bless? Would we serve them with more joy and love if we knew we would not have our own family one day?” I’ve been pondering this and it certainly gives a new outlook, especially when I think of how my siblings are growing up so fast and one day they will be mothers and fathers to the next generation. Am I pouring out everything I can into their lives while we live together, or am I distracted? Do I think I would serve “my own” family better and more tenderly one day? I certainly will not do so then if I will not now! I desire to grow in this area and serve more joyfully and wholeheartedly.

Dear friend, how grateful I am that the Lord has allowed us to walk through this journey together and to share in His faithfulness. May we go forward with vigor and faith, trusting Him Who guides us by the hand. I look forward to seeing Him work in your life and bless your faith. Every single prayer and burden we cast upon the Lord now, will one day be answered far more incredibly than we can even imagine (and we girls are quite good at imagining things, aren’t we?!). I’m keeping you in my prayers! Let’s joyfully press on, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly!” (Psalm 84:11)

Resting in the Lord,
Your sister in Christ

NOTE: Summer can be a special but irregular time of year. In the midst of the varied schedules and activities it can be easy to let our time with the Lord become shortened each day. We encourage you to read about the Summer Pursuit (hosted by Loving the Lord Ministries) which begins today. It is a special challenge to keep us diligently studying God’s Word together. We encourage you to do the pursuit with your own sisters (and/or brothers/friends).

Testimonies from Big Sisters (April Challenge)

…Who Took the “Encourage Your Siblings Challenge” in April

We were so encouraged to hear from those of you who took the “Encourage Your Siblings” Challenge last month. Here are just a few stories we received and wanted to share!

Before we do, however, we want to congratulate the winner of The Maiden’s Menu Cookbook and potholder giveaway

Abby Cooper!

We will be sending your prize shortly! God bless each of you who took the challenge; may He continue to bless your investment in each of your precious siblings.

Kinslea Davenport

My name is Kinslea Davenport, and I am 11. I have four brothers. From the very first day that we began this challenge, I felt closer to my siblings. We read a chapter of Proverbs every day. We also memorized Philippians 4:8, James 3:5, Colossians 4:24, and Matthew 28: 1-9 throughout April. For the special things we did together every week, we played soldiers, made a special breakfast, made a mopping team, played kickball, and had pillow fights. At the end of April, we had a special dinner, and it consisted of salad, meatloaf, baked potatoes, okra, and asparagus. For dessert we ate homemade ice cream and cookies. I am very thankful that we did this challenge because it brought me closer to my siblings.

Gracie Harmon

My name is Gracie Harmon, and I am 12 years old. I did the Bible study with my little siblings in April, and they really liked it! They kept asking me through the whole month of April when we could do another study. I don’t think that one day went by without them asking me! We memorized 5 verses together last month. Even my little 3-year-old brother can recite most of them. Thank you so much for you testimony to all of us that receive KBR!

Christianna Hellwig

Our special dinner went really well; we have a park behind our house and we went there to have a picnic. I have been really encouraged by my siblings’ response to our Bible study time together; they all want to do it again. I think we will do a deeper study of some godly men in the Bible next month. I have grown closer to them during this time and am seeing fruit in their lives. It is truly wonderful how the Lord works when we follow Him. I am so thankful that the Lord did not allow me to give up on our relationships and say it was to late; it is never too late to invest in them and create a memory that will last. Praise be to Christ.

Bethany Melton

We took the sibling challenge in the month of April. It was truly a challenge, but it helped all of my siblings and I grow closer together.

Alyssa Grace

At the beginning of the month I gave my siblings a few eggs to attempt hatching them in our incubator. So far seven chicks have hatched, and we still have 6 eggs that should start hatching tomorrow. Leah (age 6) is so excited! I also let Leah help me with “chick chores.” Little children seem to love to do jobs that they see older people do! Throughout the month, I tried to participate in games that my siblings were playing. They enjoy it so much when there is another person in the game. I was amazed at how well my siblings did on their Bible verse memory! We memorized Ephesians 4:31-32, Matthew 5:44, and Mark 11:22.

For our special dinner together, my siblings and I made garlic butter chicken, mashed potatoes, broccoli, brownies, and frozen yogurt. I let my little sisters make the brownies. They were delighted! I’m sure that this challenge will not only encourage my siblings, but also be a fun family tradition.

Abby Cooper

My name is Abby Cooper and I am 9 years old. I have three brothers and we completed the “Encourage you Siblings Challenge.” It has helped me because I have heard and listened to God more on how to treat my brothers and how I should react to them. Before I would not have treated them very nicely, because I thought they were not being nice to me. The Bible verses we have memorized talk about “being kind to one another and building each other up.” (1 Thess. 5:11)

Throughout the day we say the verse when a reminder on how to treat each other. I think my brothers liked reading together. We enjoyed it so much that we are going to keep reading the Bible every day and memorizing verses too. Thanks for encouraging me to do this challenge.

The Cooper Siblings enjoying a trip to the zoo together

Elizabeth Bryan

We enjoyed the challenge; in fact, my sister Anna and I are continuing our Bible Study together! We had our special dinner together last week.

Sarah Wiens

Thank you for sending out the sibling challenge for April! When I first received it in mid-March, I knew that God wanted me to take the challenge. I was very busy preparing for a music exam, and I really felt this was God’s way of saying, “What’s more important? Your siblings, or your music?” So I took it, along with another girl from my church. It wasn’t easy. Memorizing verses was hard, especially for my little sister, who often ended up frustrated with herself because she couldn’t memorize as fast as everyone else can. But it was a lesson in patience; and as I kept going, I was really blessed. I couldn’t believe how there could be so many jewels of truth even in chapters of 1 Samuel that seemed purely factual! Every time I chose to spend time with my siblings instead of doing something else, I was blessed by the time I spent with them. At the end of the month, we did the special dinner, and then we quoted and acted out our memory verses for Dad and Mom. I also gave each of my siblings a character award (a ribbon with a piece of paper that stated various character qualities that I saw in each of them). They were simple awards, yet each of my siblings treasures their awards. Thank you again for sending the challenge out. It was a blessing to our whole family!

NOTE: Summer can be a special, but irregular time of year. In the midst of the varied schedules and activities it can be easy to let our time with the Lord become shortened each day. My siblings and I have enjoyed doing the Summer Pursuit each summer (hosted by Loving the Lord Ministries), as it is a special challenge to keep us diligently studying God’s Word together. It begins next month and we would like to encourage you to do the pursuit with your own sisters (and/or brothers)! Read our testimony here and check out the pursuit here.

Looking forward to what He will teach,

Honor Your Mother! (May)

by Maggie B.

“Honour thy father and mother;
(which is the first commandment with promise).”
{Ephesians 6:2}

When thinking about the topic of blessing your mother on Mother’s day, I find it interesting that just the other day I was telling my mommy that it seemed every plan I’ve had to surprise her, did not work exactly as I had planned, because she wasn’t helping me with it! We are so close that I find it hard to do a grand project, without consulting her for her ideas and help!

Though I have planned elaborate surprises to bless my mother before, simple works well. A loving mother will enjoy any effort her children make to bless her. Here are some ideas that I hope will encourage you as you make your mom’s Mother Day special.

Meal Ideas

Over the years, I, with the help of my sister, have planned meals to make on Mother’s Day. It’s a challenge to put together a “special occasion” meal at times, but you really cannot go wrong, if you consider what foods she enjoys. You can either plan a “secret menu” or just ask her what she would like. Collaborate with your siblings and scout around to see if you can find a new recipe to try. Planning is the key to success.

I thought I’d share a couple recipes with you that I have made for a special occasion breakfast for my Mommy. Preparing a breakfast-in-bed is another special idea! [KBR’s cookbook, The Maiden’s Menu, includes special menu suggestions for a “Mother’s Day Breakfast in Bed” and a “Mother’s Day Tea,” along with more wonderful recipes to try!]

Vegetarian Egg Strata

“My mother loves vegetables, so this dish was a hit. You can change this recipe based on what you have on hand, or what vegetables your mother likes.”

    • 1 medium zucchini, finely chopped
    • 1 medium sweet red pepper, finely chopped
    • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
    • 1 medium red onion, finely chopped
    • 2 teaspoons olive oil
    • 3 garlic cloves, minced
    • 2 teaspoons minced fresh thyme or ½ teaspoon dried thyme
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon pepper
    • 1 (1-pound) loaf day-old bread, cubed (French bread would be great!)
    • 2 (5.3-ounce) packages fresh goat cheese, crumbled or shredded cheddar cheese
    • 1 ¾ cups grated Parmesan cheese
    • 6 eggs
    • 2 cups milk
    • ¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg, optional

In a skillet, sauté zucchini, red pepper, mushrooms and onion in oil until tender. Add the garlic, thyme, salt and pepper; sauté 2 minutes more.

In a well-greased 13×9-inch baking dish, layer half of the bread cubes, half of zucchini mixture and half of cheeses. Repeat layers. In a bowl, whisk the eggs milk and nutmeg together. Pour over layers. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting.

Lemon Pound Cake Muffins

“Mommy and I both like lemon. These “muffins” are more like dessert and are quite fancy! One key to muffins is to stir only until the dry ingredients are moistened so they come out tender.”

    • ½ cup butter, softened
    • ¾ – 1 cup sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • ½ cup sour cream
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • ½ teaspoon lemon extract
    • 1 ¾ cups flour
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon baking soda

Glaze:

    • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
    • 3 tablespoons lemon juice

In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the sour cream and extracts. Combine the flour, salt and baking soda; add to creamed mixture just until moistened.

Fill greased or paper-lined muffin cups three-fourths full. Bake at 400 degrees for about 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack.

Combine the glaze ingredients; drizzle over muffins. Serve warm. Yields 1 dozen.

Gift Ideas

Again, any gift is special when it is given with love. Remember to include your siblings and ask for their ideas! They may have heard your mother mention something that she needs something in particular. Here are some thought-starters.

  • Potted flowers and plants. You can either start your plant from seed or pick it up at a garden center or greenhouse. Pick out a pretty pot or dress up a plain terra cotta pot with paint. Or get some flower bulbs that will bloom every year.
  • Cut flowers – whether they’re from a florist or gathered from the yard – are a very special gift.
  • Make a “coupon” book. Fill each page with things like “Redeem to have the windows washed” or “Good for one candlelit dinner.” Be creative and ask your siblings to pitch in and contribute jobs that they will do. Tie or staple the pages together and present them to Mother.
  • Fill a jar with slips of paper, each containing a Bible verse.
  • Make a handicraft project, such as an apron, tablecover or dishcloth and present it prettily in tissue paper and ribbons.
  • Create a card, either stamped, hand-drawn or purchased, and fill it with a message from each of the children of the family. For a different approach, you could also each compose a message and record it on a cassette tape, CD or video. This would be a special keepsake!
  • Make a basket filled with pretty and useful things that she will enjoy. Some ideas? Boxed tea, a tea cup, stationery or note cards, a pen, a cooking magazine subscription, a gift card to a favorite restaurant, a herbal sachet or handmade soap, flower seeds, or a CD of music.

I hope these ideas help you to plan a delightful Mother’s Day this year!
